Requirements


The requirements for a Laboratory Director of a CLIA high-complexity designated laboratory (the case for all but the smallest laboratories) are for the individual to possess a doctoral level degree in Laboratory Medicine or a related science or a medical degree such as MD or DO. The most common route is to become a medical doctor in Pathology (hence the ASCP and CAP being Pathology organizations). But an emerging route is the PhD in Laboratory Medicine and passing a board certification. Let's look at that pathway.

For high-complexity testing laboratories, CLIA requires directors to possess an earned doctoral degree in a chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science from an accredited institution, in addition to board certification from a recognized certifying body.

A laboratory director assumes overarching responsibility for the quality and integrity of laboratory testing. This includes oversight of personnel competency, test validation, compliance with regulatory standards, and ensuring accurate and timely reporting of test results. Directors also play a pivotal role in strategic planning, budgeting, implementing new technologies, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
