Well, it's that time of the year. Whether it's your first (congrats on passing boards) or your 40th (congrats on being able to retire before getting replaced by AI bots), it's time to celebrate the laboratorians in your life, and of course, yourself.
First off, when is lab week this year? April 19, 2026-to April 25, 2026
So, get those gloves on and get to work on those erlenmeyer flask pinatas.
TIPS FOR SUCCESS
When thinking of ideas for lab week, remember, you are trying to make your team members feel like they are cared for. Everyone has a different love language, so try to hit a different love language for each day of the week.
Do not do things that require lots of work on the part of the employees. It should not be bring-your-own. That means no to potlucks. That means no to lab fairs that cause extra work. It should not be a gift certificate either. That's lame.

Idea #1: Food.
People love food. Catered lunches are great, but be sure to do something special, not just pizza that doesn't make it to the night shifters. The key here is to make everyone feel like a valued person. If you have evening/night shifters, deliver food yourself. It is appreciated.
If your lab is outpatient, it can be fun to do a meal or happy hour after work. Unfortunately, for inpatient work, it is difficult, nay impossible, to get everyone together because inevitably someone will be stuck in the lab.
Idea #2: Gifts.
Coffee tumblers, sweatshirts. Things that people would want in real life are good gifts for lab week. Splurge on higher quality goods rather than cheap trinkets that will be thrown away. If they are going to be adorned with logos, make they tasteful and small.
Idea #3: Recognition.
This can take any number of forms: Handwritten notes telling people why they are valued. A wall of fame with polaroids of everyone and their favorite colors, foods, and favorite lab test. Something that shows that lab workers are real people all with their own stories.
Idea #4: Tours.
Lab weeks isn't only to show appreciation for lab workers, it's also to highlight what the lab does. It is probably obvious to you that the other people who work in the hospital have no idea what happens in the lab. Tours of the lab can be a fun way to raise the profile of the lab and show everyone that we do actually do science.
You can also put up displays around the hospital highlighting what the people in the laboratory do.
Idea #5: Decorate.
Lights, garlands, posters. Anything to make the laboratory space a little brighter and little more cheerful. Decorate the people too. Hats, necklaces, boas. Get creative.

Idea #6: Contests (with prizes).
Lab trivia. Mystery specimen ID. Meme caption contest. Pin the glove on the microscope. Test tube toss contest. Hallway bowling (a personal favorite).
A game of "guess the hematocrit"? Anybody?
In Conclusion...
Get creative. Don't half ass it. Lab weeks done without thought or effort may as well not happen at all. Use it as a chance to really show your employees that they are cared about as much as nurses. Don't be a cold pizza.
